St Martin & St Ninian, Whithorn
Post-War church by Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendell, his only building in Scotland, with a distinctive double belfry
A symmetrical cruciform church, consisting of nave, chancel and transepts designed 1955-58 and built 1959-60 by English architect Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel , his only known work in Scotland. and built 1959-60. Its grey harl and slate roofs are given immense character by the wide entrance gable topped with a distinctive double belfry above a pointed arched window surmounting the square porch.
Substantially reordered following the Second Vatican Council, the interior is white-painted, with two side chapels and a triangular roof over the sanctuary. The Stations of the Cross are by Donald Hastings and the Lady Chapel was painted and stencilled by Eveline Dorothy Hastings in blue and gold. There is a crucifix by Hew Lorimer on the east wall.
