Sacred Heart, Wigtown

Simple little cruciform shaped late-Victorian Gothic Church, one of only two buildings attributed to architect JG Garden Brown

A simple and unpretentious brick-built cruciform Gothic church, of nave and apse, one of only two buildings attributed to little-known architect John George Garden Brown and built in 1879, shortly before his early death.

Its door sits within a shallow gabled porch, the line echoing the line of the gable above. There are four lancet windows beneath a niche above containing a white marble statue of Christ.

The calm interior contains a pine bench style pews facing the wooden altar beneath the open timber beamed roof. The church is also used as a venue during the famous annual Wigtown Book Festival.

Scotland's Churches Trust does not own any of the buildings listed in this directory and cannot assist with enquiries relating to any individual churches, these must be sent to the churches themselves.
