All Saints’ Church and Bell Tower, Inveraray
Gothic-style church, built in red granite in 1885 by Wardrop & Anderson of Edinburgh, with a later detached bell tower with peal of ten bells
The Gothic-revival church was built 1885-86, in local red stone, to a design by Wardrop and Anderson of Edinburgh. Many of its interior furnishings gifted by Niall Diarmid Campbell, 10th Duke of Argyll and it houses a medieval font relocated from the nearby ruined St Malieu’s Chapel. The church now hosts services from the Scottish Episcopal Church and the Roman Catholic Church.
Its detached bell tower, known as the ‘Duke’s Tower’ was built 1923-31 by the firm of Hoare & Wheeler, also in Gothic-revival style, as a war memorial to the Campbell dead of the First World War and previous wars. It contains a peal of ten bells cast by founders John Taylor of Loughborough in 1926 and hosts an exhibition in the entrance to the ringing chamber. A team of volunteer change-ringers maintains the bells and tower, regularly playing there and hosting events and open days throughout the year. See their website for event details and admission prices.
