Park Church, Stirling
A late Scots Gothic church by JJ Stevenson, with some wonderful Arts & Crafts era stylings and a eye-catching timber ceiling.
Designed by Glasgow-born architect J.J. Stevenson, work began on this late Scots Gothic church in 1901. Originally built for the United Free Church of Scotland, it opened its doors in Sept 1902 as the “Peter Memorial Church”. It was named after a Mr Robert & Mrs Helen Peter, members of the local Free Church congregation who had left a legacy of around £15,000 in 1890 for the building of a new Free Church in Stirling..
Built following the union of the United Presbyterian Church with the majority of the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, the building was also sometimes known as the “North United Free (Peter Memorial) Church”. When the majority of the United Free Church congregations reunited with the Church of Scotland in 1929, the church was renamed St Columba’s Church, in order to avoid confusion with the city’s North Parish Church. In 2020, St Columba’s united with the congregation of Allan Park South Church, shortly before the latter building was sold. The retained building was then renamed once more and is now called the Park Church.
Its rubble-built, large square tower was originally intended to be topped with a crown, but this was never added due to lack of funds. It has a relatively short nave with three bays and a gallery, its west aisle also has a timber gallery and it was built with extensive hall accommodation. On entering the sanctuary, the visitors’ eyes are soon drawn to the magnificent timber ceiling. The well-maintained pipe organ, by Binns of Bramley, was installed in 1903.
The millennium window, by Christian Shaw, was installed in 2002 as part of the centenary celebrations of the church. Other stained glass by John Blyth, installed between 1980 and 1988. Significant refurbishment of the interior and repairs to the fabric of the building were carried out in 2021-22 following the unification of the two congregations.
