This handsome Gothic, rectangular plan church, consisting of a five bay nave attached to a five bay church hall (originally a school), was built in 1855-56 to the designs of the noted Victorian architect Edward Welby Pugin  It was formally opened on the 13 January 1856 by the Rt Rev James Gillis, Bishop of Edinburgh.

The church was painted and refurbished in time for its golden jubilee in 1906 and a new pipe organ installed, with the financial assistance of Andrew Carnegie. Further renovations were carried out ahead of the 100th anniversary, with its original pews removed, and sent to be used as seating for a time at Blairgowrie Junior Football Club, and new pews of Japanese oak installed in the sanctuary in their place. As was the case in the majority of Catholic churches, further changes were made to the sanctuary following Second Vatican Council, despite the protestations of the congregation. Further significant repair works were planned and took place between 2013-16, to address long-term issues with the interior and exterior fabric of 160 year old building.

The sanctuary has since been fully refurbished and is now a light and airy space. There are three stained glass windows depicting the Holy Family, St Stephen and St Anne, believed to date from the opening of the building, and three stained glass window lights, depicting Christ as the Good Shepherd, made in the 1960s by monks of Pluscarden Abbey.
