Newburgh Church (Lindores Parish)
A handsome little Edwardian Kirk with a bold square battlemented tower and late Scottish Gothic exterior fronting onto Newburgh's main street
This delightful little late Gothic kirk was built for the local United Free Church congregation by the architectural firm of Thoms and Wilkie, of Dundee, and opened on the 27th June 1906. The United Free Church reunited with the Church of Scotland in 1929 and this building was eventually retained for their combined congregations when the 1833 Newburgh Parish Church, designed by William Burn, was demolished in 1967.
This pretty church was originally designed to accommodate 350, with its chancel, containing a richly carved pulpit, divided from the nave by an impressive stone arch with carved capitals. Some lovely stained glass to be seen in the nave.
Its church hall is regularly used by local groups and for a host of activities, including coffee mornings, knit and natter sessions, community lunches and board game afternoons.
Lindores Parish was formed in 2018 as a formal union between Newburgh and Abdie & Dunbog Churches. The combined congregation operates from the two historic church kirks, with attached halls, serving the communities of Newburgh and the surrounding rural area.
