St Clare’s, Drongan

Simple little post-war boxy hall-church dedicated to St Clare. Closed and permission granted to demolish it in 2025 to build houses.

Nestled in the midst of a residential homes, this unassuming little Modernist church opened in 1967. Box-like in shape, with a flat roof, it was built using reconstituted grey blocks, that are mostly exposed, with occasional patches of roughcast to create points of difference. A band of reddish-brown spruce boarding was also wrapped around the wall, just below the roofline to create some contrast with the grey beneath and a large black crucifix was fixed to the front gable.

The expansive and airy interior was lit by the clear windows along both sides and focus was drawn to the chancel by the exposed timber rafters. The projecting roof light above the dark-stained timber lined chancel funnelled sunlight directly onto the timber altar, providing this part of the uncomplicated and basic hall church some unexpected drama.

The church was officially closed in 2025 and permission was granted by the local authority to demolish it and build four homes in its place.
