Upper Annandale Parish Church, Moffat
Dramatic red sandstone, late-Victorian Gothic church by architect John Stanforth housing a good collection of stained glass.
Impressive church designed in an Early English Gothic style by architect John Starforth in 1884 and built 1887-1887, with a central tower flanked by bowed stair towers. A hall, at the west end, was designed by Starforth, but extended in 1898 by the noted architectural partnership of David MacGibon and Thomas Ross.
Its richly carved entrance leads to a wide interior, topped by a braced timber wagon roof, with galleries held aloft by slender cast iron columns. A profusion of stained glass includes a rose window above the pulpit designed by Starforth and other windows by James Ballantine & Son, Ballantine & Gardiner, William Meikle & Sons and Abbey Studio. The 1894 pipe organ, with ist neatly stencilled pipes, was built by Eustace Ingram.
The church was substantially refurbished in 2023, which saw the removal of its pews to make the space more accessible and flexible. Having been known as St Andrew’s Parish Church since its inception, the congregation also opted to change its name to Upper Annandale Parish Church.
