St Andrew’s Church, Aviemore

Robust little granite kirk built 1900-01 by the architect James Gilbert as a mission church for the growing town of Aviemore

This neat little Gothic kirk was built of grey granite and local freestone from 1900-01 to the designs of James Gilbert, who was architect of the Seafield Estates, which had granted the land for its building to accommodate the spiritual needs of visitors to and residents of the growing town of Aviemore.

Erected for a total cost £1250, St Andrew’s was officially opened by the Very Rev Dr Norman Macleod on Friday 8th March 1901. It was one of four mission churches that had recently been erected in the locality (the others being at Dalwhinnie, Newtonmore and Boat of Garten), during a period of extensive church-building by the Church of Scotland and other denominations.

The architect fitted out the interior with pulpit, pews, roof and wall panelling with polished yellow pine. The oak and walnut war memorial was carved by students of the Pre-Raphaelite artist, woodcarver and academic Prof Gertrude Martineau, who taught woodcarving in a workshop, along with her sister and fellow artist Edith Martineau, for 40 years at her family home in nearby Rothiemurchus. Aged 85, Gertrude herself carved a tablet that was inserted into the memorial, to commemorate the local fallen of World War One, before it was installed in 1923.
