St Andrew’s Parish Church, Bo’ness

Closed August 2025

A striking Edwardian cruciform church, built for the United Free Church of Scotland on a prominent corner plot with a distinctive and unusual three stage tower with a little green copper spire, that displays a combination of Perpendicular Gothic and Art Nouveau detailing. It was built in 1905 by the architectural practice of John Nicoll Scott and Alexander Lorne Campbell, and consists of a well-appointed four bay nave, tower on the north elevation, transept and adjacent church hall.

The sanctuary is crowned by a fine timber ceiling, held aloft on stone corbels, with a timber gallery on the north end, which houses a stained glass window depicting ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ by noted artist Oscar Paterson. A pointed arch separates the chancel, with its timber ceiling, oak panelling and another window by Paterson, this one depicting “The Ascension”.

In 1929, the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland united, bringing the two national denominations together again, with most of the UF churches becoming Church of Scotland. In August 2025, the congregation of St Andrew’s formally united with that of Bo’ness Old Kirk and the decision was taken to close St Andrew’s and only retain the Old Kirk for worship, which will be renamed Bo’ness Parish Church. This closure occurred during a nationwide rationalisation of its property portfolio by the Church of Scotland.
